RIP Tom Magliozzi The click is now without the clack May the Tap-it brothers, the most famous Cantabridgians in all the nation, reign supreme over NPR radio weekends..... I learned huge amounts about the physics, mechanics, economics and retail mysteries of automobiles. I laughed a million times more at their infectious laughter, and endless comic wit, that was never ever dismissive of their callers lack of knowledge. I always wanted to get through to their radio show and ask this question.... Why is it that all windshield wipers fail to wipe my windshield clean? In the very worst of wet snow, sleet, freezing rain, when all the salts, oils, and grime of the streets splash on my windshield, the wipers fail to clean and make the road visible. They dont clear, they only smear!!! What causes this???? It is the property of the rubber blades deteriorating under the assault of acid rains? ? Is it the chemistry of the acid in the rain, sleet and snow that causes minute abrasions on the glass? Is it the chilling temperature of the outside air, or the temp of the glass that the defroster fails to erase? Is it a combination of all the above? Never got through. Never got an answer. What say you guys?
