Two important branches of philosophy are Idealism and Materialism. Imagination, Abstraction, Fancy are some other relevant ideas related to Idealism. Shape, size, physical existence, perceptibility etc. are some concepts closely connected to Materialism. Why should there be two distinctive groups holding two separate views? Can idea/concept exist without material shape of that idea/concept? Again can you shape anything without prior thinking(concept/imagination/idea even sometimes fancy)? The answer is no. We cannot have a single entity. One is determined by the other or other is determined by another! Think of love. It is, everybody must agree, an abstract idea. None of us can prove it in the labratory; nor does it have , at least, apparently physical existence. But it is not really correct. Without lovers, how can you have love. So, lovers are essential for understanding love. Here lovers are material while love is ideal. And one is, of course, determined by the other. Again think of Scientific Approach which necessitates Hypothesis as its first step toward material achievement. But can you imagine a non-existent thing in order to make it appear? Think of mobile phone. There was a time when nobody ever knew it! So how did it come into being? Of course imagination led for it to exist! But it obviously conflicting with earlier view that we cannot imagine anything without its material existence! So, how do we imagine or what helps us to imagine? Yes, everything is there within the mystery of the world. Nature will help you discover everything. Right Brothers could not invent(!) aeroplane without observing Birds! Hundreds of thousands of examples, you will notice around you regarding intentions(!). Actually there can be no intention, only discovery is possible because everything is already there within the creation of nature! But well framed observation and imagination is a prerequisite for such discovery. Yes, of course, there can be sudden discovery. This unwanted revealation can be attributed to fancy which surely differs from the well stratified imagination. Fancy is often random leading rarely to any ultimate result of high significance. So, for discovery the blend of imagination with preset material specimen is a must!
