Two medical assistants have been accused of gross negligence that allegedly led to the death of a 6 month old baby at Phimbi Health Centre in Balaka. Reports suggest that between October 25th and 31st, the accused consistently left their posts and went AWOL – effectively closing the hospital. According to the Village Development Committee Chairperson, Ephraim Kamtedza the only nurse on duty failed to treat the baby who being treated for Malaria and Pneumonia because the facility’s dispensary had been locked. Balaka Hospital spokesperson, Settie Piriminta, dismisses the allegations and says the child was in fact attended to, but had choked to death.
