Two months after my late husband and I completed our courses of studies at our university, we both felt rather poor. I had obtained a job but my husband, with a masters in business, still had not landed employment. It was creating friction. My father came up to Michigan visiting us for a few days that cold winter. After some quiet observation, Dad sat us both down and gave us some serious q & a time. Ultimately, it boiled down to, in his mind, we were not giving the Lord His due. Dad explained to us that Gods accounting is NOT the same as mans accounting. Stop right now and think about that. 1. Mistake :We tend to bring down to our hapless levels the Lord God who invented this thing we call the universe and life in the first place. 2. Remember: Youd have nothing, nada, nil, if not for His giving you the good health, wisdom, and opportunity to earn it. 3. You are His (or should be, right?) and everything you have is because He enabled you to have it. So quit your feeling selfish, greedy, insecure and worried. 4. Given the 3 items above: Pay your honest 10% of your income to tithe. Now there are many disputes over who should receive that tithe and details like that. I figure thats between you and the Lord and not my business. Help somebody less fortunate than you at least. And pay 10% of that tithe yet again in offerings. Yeah he didnt stop with that 10%. (I was earning $2.04/hr working at Whirlpool as an exec secretary - big woot) After his serious talk with us, we both were convicted to follow his advice and did not hesitate nor fail to do this after each pay check. Guess what! The next week my husband began getting calls from the local school system begging for substitute teachers. He became so busy filling in for wore out, discouraged, plum tired public school teachers in the Berrien County area, he had no down time! Next thing you know, we had opened our first savings account with $100.00 (and received a cut crystal bowl as a thankyou gift from the bank! Whoa!) Then we proceeded to pay off both our college debts by spring graduation time in June! After that we were just saving like nobodys business. Come July, we were both hit with talent scouts and agreed to jointly move out to Kansas to fill some great jobs at a hospital using the skills wed acquired relative to our diplomas. 9 months later we bought our very first home. What did Dad say?! And, folk, when you put your trust in the Lord, you dont find yourself resenting your siblings and acquaintances. You know its between you and Him whatever you have. Youre not inclined to lie, cheat and outright steal from people (you otherwise might label as suckers), cause of Whose child you are, recognizing He died for them too. And youre entertaining a spirit of praise and thanksgiving instead of self pity and resentment. There ya go! Thanks, Dad! :)
