Two multiple-organ transplants in a day From – The Hindu Chennai, April 20, 2013 Optimal utilisation of donor organs is the aim of any well-intentioned cadaveric organ transplant programme. In a recent case, three of the harvested organs of one donor were used on a recipient. The corneas, kidneys, heart, liver, lung of E. Palani, 50, were harvested with the consent of his family members. He was declared brain dead following an accident. At Apollo Hospital, his heart, lung and one kidney were given to a recipient at the hospital, while the other kidney and liver went to another recipient. The multiple transplants took place to give patients in serious end-stage disease a chance to live. Usually, in case of bilateral organs, one can be used at the hospital it was harvested, while the other must go to the central pool. However in this case, an exception was made in consideration of the critical patients. On another occasion, the hospital would have to return a kidney into the general pool, according to sources.
