Two new Bowfin Gyotaku (fish rubbings) are finish! Yea!! For everyone who is asking, I am trying to get to paint the Lionfish today. I woke up with a migraine this morning, so I am getting a slow start. I promise I will post pics as soon as I have one finished and for those who were asking me for a Gyotaku original, you will get a text or phone call. I really appreciate the excitement around this fish! On this Bowfin, I have done one in the colors of the fish and the other one in the traditional style. Historically, Japanese fishermen made Gyotaku to record their catch using black used sumo ink. I use black acrylic paint to create the traditional style rubbing. A little bit about the Bowfin fish: Bowfins are an ancient fish who’s fossils (pictured) have been dated to the Jurassic era. In addition to breathing water through gills, they have a primitive form of lungs that allows them to breathe air. This helps them survive in low oxygen environments and can be seen at the surface gulping air. Bowfins are distantly related to the gar but are often mistaken for the invasive Snakehead fish. Bowfins are stalking, ambush predators that move into the shallows at night to prey on fish, crawfish, mollusks, and aquatic insects. ‘Bowfin in Color’ 26”x12” Kozo (mulberry) Paper (one side deckled) ‘Traditional Bowfin’ 25”x14” Mango Paper dyed olive green
