Two organic-producing farmer groups benefit from prize won by PGCot in DA12-NOAAA By Jimmy Sta. Cruz PGO Media Center AMAS, Kidapawan City (Nov. 15) – The organic strawberry production in Sitio Dulao, Dado, Alamada and the organic vegetable production in New Israel , Makilala will gain from an Agri-Tourism Pacakage courtesy of the Provincial Government of Cotabato in the amount of P500,000. The amount came from the prize won by the PGCot in the prestigious National Organic Agriculture Achievers Award (NOAAA) of the Dept. of Agriculture this October 2014 where the province was a Regional Winner of the Provincial Category besting other provinces in Region12. Eliseo M. Mangliwan, Provincial Agriculturist of Cotabato disclosed that their office opted to utilize the prize in the form of assistance to organic farms in the villages of Dado, Alamada and New Israel, Makilala knowing their high potentials and marketability. Mangliwan said the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPAg) has submitted a proposal to Gov. Emmylou “Lala” J. Taliño-Mendoza to elaborate further on the concept and the merit of helping selected farmers engaged in growing of organic strawberry and vegetables. Gov. Taliño-Mendoza, widely supportive of the agriculture sector thru implementation of worthwhile agricultural programs and projects immediately approved the proposal knowing it would be an efficient way to help budding organic producing farmers and agri-ventures. She also lauded the Department of Agriculture for coming up with the search which gives the agricultural sector particularly the Agricultural Extension Workers (AEW’s) and those engaged with agri-ventures the opportunity to demonstrate their unwavering support to organic farming and production and their ability . The search for NOAAA is a competition among Provinces, Cities and Municipalities with exemplary contribution and steadfast support to organic farming and production which also involves Agricultural Extension Workers (AEW’s). The search is also a strategy used in the effective implementation of RA 10068 or the Organic Agriculture Act of 2010 and the achievement of the envisioned goals of the National Organic Agriculture Program. The Provincial Government of Cotabato through its successful partnership with the DA has assisted many farmers in the province. Last October, the OPAG was able to release close to 5,000 bags of palay and OPV white corn seeds to calamity-affected farmers in different municipalities. Early this November, 10 Cotabato-based People’s Organizations engaged in production of organic rice and juice received a loan package assistance from the Mindanao Rural Development Program (MRDP) because of good performances and effective coordination with the Provincial Government of Cotabato in implementing agricultural program. Gov. Taliño-Mendoza assured her continued support to the agriculture sector in the province by sustaining feasible and helpful agricultural programs that uplift the lives of farmers and those projects that adhere to food sufficiency and sustainability.
