Two photos tonight -- taken in June 1968 at the Commodore Matthew C. Perry monument in Kurihama, Japan. The girl in the photos, Yuka, was 1 1/2 years old and the daughter of a UCLA grad. The close up was taken as she was standing next to the monument. I visited Kurihama to see the Perry monument, riding there from the Yokosuka Naval Base on a rented bicycle. The monument commemorates Perrys July 14, 1853, visit to open Japan to Western visitors. After speaking with Yukas father, I wandered around Kurihama and ended up having a late lunch at the home of a local family that spoke no English; since I spoke no Japanese, we communicated primarily by hand gestures. After that visit, I returned to the naval base on the bicycle.
