Two pieces of Tiffany & Co. silver from the Newark Museum - TopicsExpress

Two pieces of Tiffany & Co. silver from the Newark Museum collection. A baby bowl (with its matching underplate and spoon), ordered in 1881 from Tiffanys by Ulysses and Julia Grant for their first grandson, Ulysses S. Grant III. (My grandfather). The salver was ordered by Julia Grant ca. 1865 from Tiffanys, and has her monogram. Her husbands celebrity suddenly made shopping at Tiffanys a reality for Julia, who had scrimped plenty during her beloved spouses less successful years. But my museum has a few U.S.Grant things, too, because, well, they have me, but also because Grant and his wife Julia had lots of ties to New Jersey. They lived in Burlington, NJ during much of the war; they had a summer house on the Jersey Shore, and Grants sister was married to a man from Elizabeth, NJ (who, alas, helped trigger the gold crisis in 1869, but no matter). - Ulysses Grant Dietz, Chief Curator
