Two quotes from Jonathan Haidts The Righteous Mind worth - TopicsExpress

Two quotes from Jonathan Haidts The Righteous Mind worth pondering. People made moral judgments quickly and emotionally. Moral reasoning was mostly just a post hoc search for reasons to justify the judgments people had already made. And. We do moral reasoning not to reconstruct the actual reasons why we ourselves came to a judgment; we reason to find the best possible reasons why somebody else ought to join us in our judgment. If Haidt is right that moral intuition is what is guiding us, this has enormous implications, especially for someone like me who is tasked with helping shape peoples morality and ethics. If someone intuits that something is just wrong we will find it very difficult to reason them off that spot. And this is most likely a good thing. A serial killers major problem isnt the inability to reason, but the inability to feel. So, how do we connect with other peoples moral emotions? I find it interesting that Jesus spent so much time telling stories. These evoke an emotional response which may be the key to touching the part of us that actually makes moral decisions.
