Two revolutionary and effective strategies for helping each other - TopicsExpress

Two revolutionary and effective strategies for helping each other emerged from the impromptu meeting of MindFreedom Nelson we had last night in a safe and secure location that included the eating of good food and the letting down of our guard and the support we have all learned to expect and trust from each other. One of these strategies is actually meetig each other where we are at. I do not mean location. I mean where we are at emotionally and mentally. Situationally. Many of us are initially scared to talk about being suicidal or wanting to self harm because we have been taught by the professionals that such things increase the likelihood that these things will happen. If someone asks me if I am suicidal or feeling like hurting myself it is far more likely that I am going to think they care and want to actually know. That I can talk to them. There are some excellent suicide prevention peer support materials online. I am doing this off the top of my head so I do not have links. They are not hard to find tho. I think I posted one on here just a day or two ago. Another strategy we have discovered that did not make us self destruct is letting our voices talk to each other. It can be a tad strange hanging out in the back of your own head but you can get used to it. I have actually done it for most of my life for short periods of time. I am cautious about this one however. The Hearing Voices Network leads spectacular groups world wide. They are here on Face Book too. What I am basically saying is that a lot of the fear about peer support that is out there is created first because our power to make effective change in our own lives is often removed from us and placed in the hands of strangers who do not even take the time to really listen to us and find out who we are. How can they make good decisions for us when they do that? This never made senst to me. Anyway, just a bit of an update.
