Two very special ladies have left me to begin their new journey at Rainbow Bridge with their friends. My gorgeous girls enjoyed a special bond, Henrietta only ever had two litters and Lou was never a mum, both much loved pets. From day one, where one was, the other would be, snuggled up in the play pens, following each other round like a little hoggie train, nose to bottom. As they aged, Henrietta developed cataracts in both eyes and she became a little withdrawn. The decision was made, a very special decision, Henrietta and Lou became house mates and the change in Henrietta was instant. She gained her second wind with Lou to guide her and keep her company, both would come out to eat at the same time, they wheeled next to each other in the play pens and once again, snuggled up together in their nest box. Just before Christmas I noticed that Lou had a growth on her chin, Mummy knew what was happening, we had gone through the same with Hermione - you were not in pain and we all just wanted one last Christmas together. Last night you were lying out of the nest box you shared with Henrietta and I knew that the time was right but as I cleaned your bowls this morning, I noticed food in the water dish, both of you were such clean girls and I guess what was happening so both of you were booked in to see the vet this afternoon. My lovely Lou Pig had a tumour in her lymph glands and given her age and where the tumour was, the right thing to do was to let her sleep gently away. I think you chose to leave as well Henrietta, you didnt want to let your best friend to be without you did you? When Patrick looked in your mouth, no need for any gas with your sweet, sweet nature, my fears were justified - you had tumours on your top jaw jaw line - we know that mouth cancer is the nastiest cancer for any hedgehog to get, it is fast and aggressive and plain horrible - another decision to let you sleep quietly away, with your best friend. And that is how you leave me, side by side, laid to rest in my Dads garden, you will have spring blooms over you, summer flowers and autumn colours falling down gently on your place of rest. Thank you for sharing my life, for the laughs, love, cuddles and sniffles and snuffles as you plonked yourself on my neck. I would not have missed our years together for anything. Run Free My Special Girls, Mummy will miss you terribly but memories are there forever and they will be locked in my mind and heart with all the others. Never goodbye, just till we meet again.
