Two weeks ago, I wrote about the first firemen on the scene of the accident, and their bitter fate. The uniforms of those unfortunate men, as well as other clothes worn by those directly involved back in 1986, can still be found in the exclusion Zone, if you know where to look. The place where they were dumped is so highly radioactive even today, it makes protective clothing and respirator masks mandatory, and limits the duration of a visit to a few minutes. Now I am by no means one of those people who run around the exclusion zone just to get a picture of the most highly contaminated spot, but these uniforms I absolutely wanted to see because of their relevance to the history of the place. Right now, Ive been sitting in front of my computer for half an hour, trying to find a way to describe my feelings when I was there. Im at a loss of words....
