Two weeks ago at Bonnaroo I passed up seeing Cake and Grouplove (two bands I like) to see Bobby Womack, thinking it is not often that one gets a chance to encounter Soul Royalty. Before he came out, the stage filled with 13 musicians: four horns, two drummers, three female backup (and sometimes foreground) singers. I got chills when his first song was Across 110th Street. More chills when he evoked Marvin Gaye and Sam Cooke in a tribute to soul greats who have passed on. I loved that the tent was filled with very young blacks and whites soaking up music history. I am so glad I stayed until the last note. It turns out that it was his last concert.
