Two weeks ago at the University of New Mexico I gave a speech to a group of college students at the Free the Black Prisoners rally. It was a beautiful night with a wonderful company of concerned peers who are dedicated in bringing awareness to the mass incarceration of African American men and women across the penal system in America. This is actually only half of my unprepared speech performed on the spot, by the inspired request of a respected musliminah. I pray that there is a truth that can shed light on this troublesome issue, but I leave you with this....Mass incarceration is a HUMAN issue not just a black issue, and what goes on inside prisons all across America DWARFS the insane atrocities that occurred at Guantanamo Bay. What goes on in solitary confinement is not told because it is suppressed by a means that destroys the constitution of an inmates soul...so the story is rarely told, and seldomly believed. How would I know...well I was incarcerated for fourteen years and I did 12 and a half years in solitary confinement. Like Maya Angelou..I know why the caged bird sings....
