Two weeks to go. Its hard to believe that the season is coming to close, but the nights are drawing in and Brownies on his hols so it must be true. This week well start with the Sunday 4th XI who finished their inaugural campaign in the Cheshire County League last weekend. Led by Billy White and having a mix of players not able to play regular Saturday cricket, some 2nd XI players and several juniors, the team made an excellent start. Though the tables arent quite up to date yet, it looks like we finished in the top three. Terrific effort. We had several names in the top stats of the division too. Jordan Sealey and Elliot Titch Lane both in the top ten for batting and two types of Davies in the wicket takers. Stephen Davies and Ooh Gary. The 3rd XI won their game on Thursday this week which is some going. Irby conceded so no action again. Frustrating. The 2nd XI went to Wilmslow Wayfarers with high hopes after such a good run of recent form. Unfortunately we came away licking our wounds as things didnt go to plan as we posted a heavy loss. It was one of those games where it went horribly wrong. Not much could be gleaned from the captain after the match that was suitable for those of a delicate disposition, but the scorecard tells the story. The tables arent up to date yet so how the final fixture shapes up next week will see if a promotion place is possible. David Mitfords fabulous rope winder upper had its debut today. Comments were plentiful that it looked like a medieval torture device for recalcitrant youths and so it proved. Neal Hackett should have taken bets on who was the first to do themselves a mischief with it. There were two names in the frame on Friday night. Lo and behold, one of the names did indeed do just that. Not one to let anyone down, Ben Istead take a bow. The 1st XI hosted Wayfarers and typically Gledders won his first toss of the second half of the season. It was Neal Hacketts 50p that did it. It was decided wed bowl. The first wicket was a run out. A direct hit from square leg, with one stump to aim at. Was it one of the youngsters with a bullet arm who can launch the ball accurately from anywhere on the field to the keeper? Nope. It was Rob Coombes. Run out Coombes with a direct hit. Who ever thought that would be heard? From that point on the visitors ground out 101-9 in 45 overs. Three scores in double figures and one of those was byes, courtesy of poor Joe Goodier whose new sponsorship deal with Teflon is making progress. To be fair to Joe, his team mates did make life difficult for him.The beautifully manicured outfield and aggresive field placing gave him no protection. After (a small) tea, thanks to Kate Gledhill, we set about a reply and after Coombsey had gone for a rapid 15 from thirteen balls, there was a collapse. We needed a steady hand on the tiller to get us out of this mess. An old head to dig in. A person with years of experience to get us to the winning post. Not a chance! It was the second youngest in the team Jack Taylor with a quite superb 47* who saw us home. With two more sixteen year olds and a seventeen year old at the other end, the win came. So did a guaranteed promotion to division two. Consecutive promotions for the 1st XI. A quite magnificent effort from the youngest, fittest and most probably, mentally strongest team in the division. Everyone who has contributed to this seasons success should be hugely proud of what they have done. Just a reminder, today the Under 18s are playing in the Mid Cheshire U18s Finals Day at Warrington CC. Come along and support these terrific cricketing lads in proper Mighty Squirrels style.
