Two years ago I conducted an experiment to see if I could bake chocolate chip cookies on the dash of my car. The outside temperature was near 90 degrees but we had totally clear skies to plenty of sunshine getting into the car. I placed a thermometer into the car along with a cookie sheet with 6 chocolate chip cookies. The temperature went to 140 degrees and the cookies started to flatten out, baked but never really got good and done like in the oven. Good thing I love cookie dough. So we know it gets very hot in a vehicle left in the sun to the point we can almost bake food. Yesterday I put my weather station into my car to track the temperature on an hour by hour basis. I only did this for about 4 hours and I was a little behind in getting set up. I put the station in at 2:00 with an outside temperature of 92 degrees. The temperature quickly went up to 130 degrees and stayed there for 3 hours before finally dropping to 127 by 6:00 pm. My wife and I went to the movies and when we returned at 10:00 pm the temp was still 87 in the car. I have dark windows (tint) and I think that contributed to a little lower temp than what I thought it would be, and it was a little later in the day when I started. If I had windows with no tint, I believe the temp would have hit 140 easily if not higher as it did when I baked cookies. Well see how hot it gets today as Im measuring throughout the day. A reminder of why we dont leave children or pets in a vehicle at any time.
