Two young artist painted a piece at an event over the weekend that was clearly influenced by my abstract funk style..Biten we all do it to some extent…Look at my gorilla, now look at Fienzs bboy characters, you can trace that influence most likely all the way back to Ken Swifts personal style. Thats how we evolve, Da Vinci’s helicopter is influenced by insects and birds…Now we see them flying over head daily. Long story short, I call the kids out on it… One is totally respectful and acknowledges the influence, the other is a total jerk and proceeds to be offensive. So I invite the respectful one to paint so he can study the style first hand and learn how to approach it correctly and use it right, the other will most likely continue biting styles and passing them off as his own without ever truly learning and sharpening his own craft. Moral of the story, Respect the game first. Add to the culture just as much as you take away from it and you will elevate your skills to the point of watching it grow through others. Understand we are always students of the game taking influence, But the moment you become too cool for school is when you show the fact that youre just a toy biting styles.
