Two young men in their twenties born at the end of the nineteenth - TopicsExpress

Two young men in their twenties born at the end of the nineteenth century and friends from an early age lived and worked in Murton Co.Durham and joined the Durham Light Infantry to serve in WW1.One was a bachelor whilst the other was married. Both families in a close knit community knew each other. As they left to serve the married man found out his wife was pregnant with their first child. Not long into the conflict the married man was shot and killed with his friend next to him.His widow then gave birth to a baby girl.Upon his return home after the war the soldier who survived felt a need to look after the young widow and her young daughter and after a while the couple married and eventually after a number of years had a daughter of their own.The second daughter is my Mother and her father was my beloved Grandad who indeed looked after and cared for my Grandmother until she passed away in October 1963 and brought up my Auntie Mary as his own until his own passing in February 1970.Forty four years later there is not a day goes by without thinking about my Grandad [ by whom I was named] and tonight as we remember the outbreak of WW1 Pte Robert Wallace and the Morcambe family are deeply in mythoughts R.I.P
