Typed up this editorial/rant on MS Word, with way too much free time on my hands. Curious to see what everyone thinks. What happened to all the excitement of the Kalos pokemon? Within many FB groups, and message boards, I saw so much excitement when people first saw things like Pangoro,Tyrantrum, Noivern, Sylveon, among many others. Like, a picture gets released, and players get excited. You know what Pokemon I saw little to no hype for? Kefki, Mega Kangaskhan, hell, even Talonflame was an afterthought to mega Charizard. Suddenly, base stats, and movepools are known, and all of a sudden, nobody likes Pangoro, or tyrantrum anymore, because they are outclassed by things like Garchomp, and Scrafty. It just bleeds into every Pokemon of every generation. Hydreiggon... arguably one of the coolest dragons ever made, with the long awaited dark-dragon typing that didn’t disappoint in terms of design. Basicaly a black King Ghidorah. Great stats and movepoo all around. A skilled players explanation for not using it: Its four points short of a common dragon speed tier. Thus it is outclassed by Flygon, Salamence, Charizard, Garchomp, Lati@s and Noivern. Then we have a Pokemon like Ferrathorn. Whoever designed the thing may have taken one tab too many. Probably the most ugly, unappealing design to most peoples’ taste Pretty “down there” with Garbordor. Hell, I even think the very much hated “Vanilluxe” has a much more interesting design than this. Ferrethorn however, with massive defenses, a great ability, only two weaknesses, and access to Spikes and Stealth Rocks, makes him one of the most used Pokemon around. I could go on for HOURS with further examples. And yeah, I cut some slack to things like Aegislash, because everyone seemed to have massive erections for him even before knowing how good he was. But trust me, take away King’s Shield, or Swords Dance, and he would go down there with Dragalge, as completely forgotten. Don’t get me wrong, I love the whole strategy aspect of Pokemon. I once got an entire group of people to rage quit the game for life, because they called it, “Anton wins at Pokemon.” They were noobs. But anyways, one thing I like about Pokemon even more is the concept of basically every conceivable mythical creature, and member of the animal kingdom, with some crazy jacked up powers, roams around a world, where you travel though, and pick a select six to be your partners. Pretty awesome concept. Not big on the anime, but one thing that made the characters more interesting, was that each person they encountered had a different Pokemon that somehow matched their personalities or look. Like how Misty was a water trainer, a guy like Surge, with his bully personality, would have the evolved form of Pikachu against Ash. Or the villains Team Rocket would use the scary poison types. When Noivern came around, it didn’t come as a shock to anyone when he got a permanent place on my team, and was the first Unova Pokemon that I ev trained. With my love for Crobat, but the desire to have a bigger flying Pokemon on my team… it was just perfect. Or how Miguel, the luchador nut was all about Hawlucha. But aside from the few exceptions, every time I got to tournaments, instead of seeing unique strategies it’s all basically the same few Pokemon on EVERY team. Top ten Pokemon on rating double battles: Mega Kanga, Talonflame, Aegislash, Mega Mawile, Rotom Wash, Amoongus, Meowstic, Sableye, Klefki. I have over 100 battles logged in. The occasional 1 in 10 noob that shows up may not have these, but every team you face will have one or more of these Pokemon. Do rating doubles and see for yourself. Why are these Pokemon so commonly used together? Basically, unless the opponent has SUPER skills, or is using the exact same team, they can beat anyone with ease. That’s what makes the game sometimes very not-fun. Many of us have fallen into this way of battling. I mean, if a tournament of fifty people all concludes that they must include several of these Pokemon on their team in order to win, where’s the competition? My Talonflame beat your Talonflame’s speed tie. I am victorious. Or, my mirror team of yours made better predictions and used Protect at the right turn… like, where’s the actual skill and “team building” in that? I personally am much more impressed when someone figures out new ways to win, with different Pokemon. Or use ones with different themes, but I’m often ridiculed for being the guy that “always uses Jolteon,” as a “theme of mine.” He’s my favorite Pokemon. He’s the Pikachu to my Ash. Yeah, every now and then I do some wifi battles without him because I feel like doing a “bird” team. But yeah, in the big leagues, I always use him. During 3rd and 4th gen, he was OU. This gen he was nerf’d, but perhaps in future gens, he’ll be a top player again. Doesn’t matter. He’s always my favorite. What are your opinions on this matter? Do you agree/disagree? What do you think makes for the most “fun style” of playing Pokemon?
