Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda response update Wednesday, Nov 13 YWAM Philippines Information is still slow coming out of the affected areas, so the detailed picture isnt completely clear yet. YWAM is basing relief efforts from YWAM Cebu (ywamcebu@yahoo), YWAM Mindanao (YWAM Surigao and Nehemiah House), and possibly also from YWAM Iloilo for the Western Visayas (Aklan). Here is what we know and what our YWAM teams are doing as of this morning: -- A team from YWAM Cebu/Impact World will travel to the Northern Cebu Island Thursday or Friday to do initial relief work/supply distribution and survey. We understand that Bantayan Island was devastated, so they will also look at how to help there. -- A team from RescueNet (YWAMs relief arm) arrived in Cebu Tuesday night. They will do local assistance in the Cebu area for two days, then plan to head to Northern Cebu/Bantayan. -- Lucille Hapa reports that rice and food stock is still readily available in Cebu, so the teams can purchase relief goods there. -- John Aust and his Vision Help International Care team (affiliated with YWAM) will arrive in Cebu on Saturday with relief supplies, will split into 3 or 4 smaller teams, and travel by boat to the west coast of Leyte Island with the main focus being Ormoc City. The teams may have to boat to Palompon from Cebu, then travel by land to the Ormoc area, since the Ormoc port was destroyed. -- The YWAM Mindanao relief team (with Michael Casey) will meet in Surigao on Monday the 18th, gather their relief goods, ferry to Leyte Island, then travel by land up the east coast of Leyte to an unspecified location that has yet to receive relief attention. -- The YWAM SOE team (Mitch Metzger) plans to travel to Tacloban City by land Thursday to provide initial assistance (not relief goods) and survey the situation. Check Mitch for updates on this one. -- There is one other contact/survey effort being made, but I do not have details on that one yet. Contacts: YWAM Cebu: ywamcebu@yahoo YWAM Mindanao / Michael Casey: miketatingcasey@yahoo YWAM Philippines: ywamnational@yahoo We will soon post financial donation information. For those interested in going to those locations to help, we strongly suggest that you contact YWAM Cebu, Michael Casey, John Aust, or YWAM Iloilo first. Some areas are completely destroyed and have no facilities to accommodate relief workers, no available supplies, and no guaranteed transportation out of those areas once you are in them. There are reports (we are trying to confirm) of growing civil unrest in Tacloban, and the possibility of the government restricting access to that city.
