Typing about an open house below, our first open house of the year - TopicsExpress

Typing about an open house below, our first open house of the year is coming up in April. We opened on April 11, 1991 so I always like a kick off party in that month to celebrate this dog rescue. I was not officially open for business in 1991 but I rescued my first dog named Hunter. Hunter was a bottle pup I raised and later I kept his brother Oscar as my first two rescues. Hunter and Oscar opened my eyes to animal neglect and later I ran into animal cruelty. That neglect made me mad enough to start this rescue and fight against cruelty for years now. The sad part is I had to rescue those two from one of my brothers. I had told my brother that one of his pups was not eating when first born and he had the absolute gall to say to me These things happen. I was beyond angry. I went and bought puppy supplies and fed that pup so he did not die of starvation. The second pup was one he could not sell from an earlier litter thanks to not socializing his pups properly so I grabbed up Oscar and took him home to be Hunters brother. I then started when I was in college working to start a data base of dogs needing homes and dogs in shelters as well as folks looking for wieners. After I graduated college and met my husband who was in college I still kept up that database but informed Dennis I was beyond not happy with many Dachshunds dying in shelters just for being wieners, digging holes, barking, too active, too smart for their owners, not staying housebroke or many wieners folks did not bother to train. After we were out of school it was not long when we leased our first farm that we started rescuing in earnest so the rest is history. Those first years we maybe kept 30 dogs a year out of shelters even when we were poor college students but that was better than doing nothing. Plus we both had other jobs at the time so rescuing full time was only a dream. Now we rescue more than full time between horses and dogs although I rescue a lot less horses in person even when volunteering with the real horse rescue here. I think placing 120 dogs a year is never a bad thing, but that all started because I had and still have a temper. I joined the fight to save homeless animals and will continue to fight for them until I am dead. I love all dogs but adore Dachshunds the best hence this rescue was born thanks to a brothers ignorance and greed in breeding and breeding and breeding. The funny part? I stole Hunters and Oscars mother after she weaned a batch of yet another pups many of whom were not healthy because they were not giving that female any rest in between litters. I took her to a local vet and begged him to spay such a sweet girl and place her with one of his customers. He agreed. Those are my first three rescues with this used wiener recycling. To this day my one brother with the stolen dog thinks coyotes got her. He never even noticed that she was gone for a whole month. And he never shed one tear she was gone How is that for someone who loves their dogs? Yes I am ashamed to admit that I am related sometimes. I realized early on that animals are not for money. They should be part of the family or give them to someone who will appreciate and love them but use them for puppy mill breeding. One of these days I will tell that brother what I did so that old dog could have a better home. I have been holding that tidbit since 1991. LOL. Yes I am a terrible sister. LOL. Some of the best critters I have ever had are fosters and rescues. My dogs do not have to have any papers to be great dogs and most I certainly did not get as pups.
