Tzirl Horowitz horowitz9@gmail [efrat-chat] 11:35 PM (1 hour ago) to efrat-chat Reflections after last weeks murderous attack and the courageous response of a few: Tragically, pigua follows pigua and yesterdays pain is replaced with todays pain, except for those to whom the pain is personal and will last forever.... Please note some points that in my opinion should be reviewed in light of the terror attack in which Dahlia Lamcus היד was murdered at the Alon Shvut junction. During the face-to face fight with the stabbing terrorist, 2 things occurred that are worthy of attention: 1) Today it is clear that courageous Yishai Katz, who instantly got out of his car, unarmed, to face the terrorist in the hope of saving Dahlia - succeeded without his realizing it while he was literally fighting for his life, to drop the terrorists knife to the ground and seemingly unarm him. 2) An unidentified young man (bless him!!) ran up and directly sprayed the terrorist with tear gas during the fight and caused him to flee - an act that possibly saved Yishais life. As the horrifying event unfolded, it turns out that the terrorist was armed with a SECOND KNIFE (!!) which he evidently drew immediately so as to return to again stab wounded Dahlia. He then engaged in a bloody struggle with Shaya from Bat Ayin who tried to shoot him from his car but when his weapon jammed after one bullet, the terrorist forcibly pulled him out of the car and fought with him viciously while stabbing repeatedly in an attempt to kill him too - until the guard from the gate came running and shot the terrorist, and yishar koach to him for that. (Please continue praying for Yishayahu ben Rivka who was seriously wounded by numerous knife wounds in abdomen, etc.) Evidently, the guard was first alerted to the ongoing attack only when a frightened young girl who had witnessed the scenario from the tzomet came running to the Alon Shvut gate to call for help. In light of these facts, the practical and immediate response in my opinion is a massive purchase and distribution of tear gas. The local vaadim of the yishuvim or the moetza should order a large enough stock asap and offer it to the residents at cost or at a subsidized rate to enable all responsible and eligible family members to carry on them at all times when leaving home. In additon, in retrospect its clear that the 24 hr. security filming around the yishuv have documented 2 crucial events lately at the bustops outside of Alon Shvut. In the latest event, in contrast to the kidnapping, had someone noticed at the time what was happening on the screen - help would have come sooner when every second was crucial. I beg those relevant parties who are dedicated to security to ensure that as of now, every minute of every hour should be observed by a shomer whose soul duty during his shift will be to watch and observe what s happening on the security screens! In so doing, the screens will not only provide after-the-fact evidence of an event, but can save lives! Also, I personally heard accounts from people who were driving by the tzomet when the attack took place. I may be mistaken, but my impression from the accounts is that due to shock and fright none of them immediately phoned to send help or drove to the guards gate (one drove passed it) or even detoured to the gate of Kfar Etzion to call for help. Knowing myself, I easily might have frozen with fright during those few crucial minutes. Its imperative that each of us remember that when witnessing an attack G-d forbid - even if we are helpless we at least must immediately call for help!!! In a more far-reaching aspect, we must publicize as wide as possible and pressure those who deal with public and legal agendas to amend the immoral stand that assumes that once the attacker is unarmed, he ceases to be life-threatening and one who kills him or attacks him at this stage will be harshly prosecuted. Regardless of what kind of weapon he uses, even though he has been unarmed, there can be no assurance that he is not carrying another knife, grenade or any other weapon that he will draw at any moment when it suits him, even his last! Factual account of this attack should be brought up again and again in demand that no one can claim that because the terrorists lethal knife (or other weapon) had fallen or was neutralized before he has totally surrendered, he must be regarded as unarmed and may not be fatally or otherwise harmed.
