Tía Tete, Tío Poncho and Loro A. Lopez-Cadena, Miami Beach, 1-22-15 Moms older sister, Maria Lorenza, was called Teté, a nickname she got when she was just a baby. When tia tete was being weened, they hid the milk bottle atop the kitchen cabinet. Shed point there and say tete (tetera or baby bottle). The name stuck. (BTW Mom, Maria Aurelia, was called bebe because the was the youngest girl). Tia Tete and her husband tio Poncho (Ponciano) Longoria had a parrot in Edinburg. Loro (as in laud--to speak) was all green and only tío Poncho could hold him without being bitten. Loro spoke only Spanish and would say things like Junnnnnior, come to breakfast! Your food is getting cold, junnnnnior, caw, caw. The neighbor next door had a whole bunch of kids. Shed yell AND cuss at them in Spanish all day long, so Loro learned to cuss. Hes say you fu..... kids are driving me crazy, GET ....OUTSIDE now! Or FU! Tia was so embarrassed, SHE DIDNT cuss, no one in the family did, and she feared people would think Loro learned these words from her! She dreaded her guests would hear him, so Loro lived on a tree in the back yard. He had a cage, but preferred the tree. It was next to the bath house/wash room. When guests came to visit, I imagine tía fretting if theyd need to use the restroom, and possibly hear Loro cussing. We loved Loro, he was like a member of the family. He lived 25 years or so. Everyone still grieved for many years after his passing. Web photo:
