T’was the night before Christmas, when all through the house, The only thing not barking was one little mouse. The goodies were stashed in the hall way with care, In hopes that soon no pup would be there. The puppies were snuggled all safe with a chew, But still managing to prove a lot of barking to do. “Nita in her head lamp and me sweeping floors, Just settling down to finish the chores. When out in the yard there came such a sound, I had to get off my butt and go look around. So out to the yard I flew like a turtle, Stepping around gifts, my biggest hurdle. Out in the yard I stepped like a trooper, A squish reminding me we need a new pooper scooper. After wiping the dust from my eyes, I spotted a new dog of moderate size. As a car sped off, so lively and quick, I thought oh mister, you are really a…hick. With renewed barking beginning again, I escorted the new little girl, To her little pen. In an attempt for quiet, I yelled at a few. It didn’t help, “Oh, he’s barking too”. Stepping back in the house and around the gift pile, We thought of you all and just had to smile. With that we thought, we’re going to bed, As visions of safe, happy dogs, dance in our head. There is shadowy place that exists between wake and sleep. It is a calm area where ideas start and, when given your energy, become a part of the dream. In a very real way, this is how Rezq Dogs started. It was not a dream. It was not even a well thought out plan. We thought we could save the few our resources and time would allow us to help. We “happened”. It was a couple of people that felt sorry for some animals and the people who didn’t know what they had. The friendship that animals grace us with each day. The bond and loyalty an animal will gift us with, if we only see and allow it. We have had some tough times. There have been tears and heart break. We were too late for some. Our success depends on our making friends, forming bonds, and getting attached to an animal, knowing we will say goodbye. That their time to belong here, to be “ours” will only be true to what we do on that day when we watch that friend travel down the road to a new forever home. Often, our last mental picture of them is as they look out the back window, watching as we fade into the distance, as they are driven to their new home. This can be very hard. They have not yet realized, we do this for them. Although a rescue was not our dream, it definitely was an idea. An idea that became a dream. I have often seen the dogs dream, chasing imaginary monsters and playing with fast rabbits. I have often wondered, when they are laying under the old truck or abandoned house, do they dream of being safe? Of being warm? Of being fed? Do they dream of a better place for their little puppies when they have nobody? I know they dream and what is a dream for if not happiness? As I write this, I am truly smiling. I am thinking of all of you. So many names, so many organizations, so, so, many people to be thankful for. So many friends, both met and unmet, that we have been blessed to enter “our dream.” Not just the human dream but the dreams of so many animals also. The thousands of animals that were destined to, without all of us, know only silence and lives prematurely ended. So many names of the furiends we have come to know and love that have gone on to spread their love to others. It is with the full knowledge of what we have and what we have done because of you that we humbly say thank you. Thank you for us, thank you for them. Thank you for helping an idea become a dream, and thanking you for helping us make that dream reality for so many. Thank you all. Merry Christmas!
