U.K. gives command to Portugal in Baltic air space. Article: Portugal assumes the Baltic Air Policing. Portugal has taken on September 2 leadership and full transition of block 36 of the Baltic Air Policing / Baltic Air Policing ( BAP ) in Lithuania . Are four NATO nations committed to fulfilling the mission of air policing of the Baltic countries , as these countries have no means of air defense . Until December 31 , Portugal will be the leading nation of the BAP , and there the contribution of resources from Germany, Canada and the Netherlands. Portugal highlighted six F -16 aircraft and 70 military to ensure this mission , 24 hours a day and 7 days a week . On September 1 held the ceremony of surrender of BAP detachments in Lithuania . Poland and the UK hands over command of operations in Portugal and Canada , respectively . In Estonia , Denmark has given way to Germany and Poland to France is replaced by the Netherlands .
