U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Matthew Sitton of Largo, FL has been selected as the Kurt Busch Race Dedication honoree for the Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Saturday, October 11, 2014. Staff Sergeant Sitton was born on February 28, 1986 and graduated from Indian Rock Christian School in 2004. Matt subsequently attended West Florida and Southeastern Universities and, in March 2006, he decided to forgo his college education and enlist in the United States Army. Sitton was given the choice of any job in the Army he wanted and he opted to join the infantry because he believed that where he was the best fit in order to serve his country. While in boot camp, he broke his company’s PT record and graduate top of his sniper class. Matt served three tours in Afghanistan with the 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division as a Ranger Sniper. During his third deployment, Staff Sergeant Sitton was mortally wounded by an enemy improvised explosive device (IED) on August 2nd, 2012 in Kandahar. He is survived by his wife, Sarah, son, Brodey, his mother Cheryl and father Steve. He was nominated for the program by his mother who said, “Matty was a dedicated soldier, who loved God, his family, his friends, his fellow soldiers and his country.”
