U.S. Court Backs Apple in Patent Case Wall Street Journal - TopicsExpress

U.S. Court Backs Apple in Patent Case Wall Street Journal (01/22/14) Wakabayashi, Daisuke; Lee, Min-Jeong U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh on Jan. 21 ruled that some of Samsung Electronics Co.s Android devices had infringed on Apple Inc.s patent for word recommendations -- i.e., the feature better known as auto-correct. In addition, she deemed invalid Samsungs patent on multimedia synchronization, or the ability to access music and movies across multiple devices in different locations. We are disappointed by the courts decision, and look forward to the jury trial [in March], when the jury is expected to consider the claims related to the remaining summary judgment requests that were denied, a Samsung spokesman responded late Tuesday. We remain confident that our products do not infringe Apples intellectual property, and we will continue to take all appropriate measures to protect our intellectual property rights. However, Judge Koh also denied Apple’s motions for summary judgment of infringement of two of its patents and on the validity of one of its patents. The CEOs of both companies are currently committed to taking part in mediation ahead of the March trial. This Feb. 19 meeting is viewed with skepticism in industry and legal circles as similar mediation efforts have previously failed. Data synchronization has been a frequent patent battleground for the two companies. Earlier this past summer, for instance, a Japanese high court upheld a lower court ruling that Samsung did not infringe on an Apple patent related to synchronizing video and music on Galaxy smartphones and tablets to servers.
