U11 Blues ‘kind of’ lose…… Staveley MWFC U11 Blues paid a second visit in two weeks to Brinsworth Whitehill FC, following last week’s 7-3 friendly mauling of this Sunday’s opponent’s sister team. The blues had been on a high of late, recording 4 wins in a row and on paper this should arguably have become the fifth notch. Brinsworth gave a good account of themselves in the early stages, matching the Blues across the park and defending well, although struggling slightly with the pace of the Staveley breaks. We’re used to seeing this Staveley side start quickly, going in search of the early advantage and on another day they might’ve had it which may have helped them settle in to some kind of rhythm, but unfortunately today they struggled to gel, giving the hosts more of the ball as the half went on. Notable performances of the first half came from Josh Winnard, who began the match in midfield following assured and impressive performances at the back. He didn’t disappoint either, showing more of the grit and determination we’d seen and enjoyed recently. Luke Hedley also continued his good form in defence as he endured an extremely busy first half as Brinsworth pounded the Staveley back line with worrying persistence. The attacks kept coming at the Blues, who now had almost everyone back in an attempt to send the hosts packing and with thanks also to good saves from keeper Ben Collins the ball was kept out of the net. Towards the end of the first half another Brinsworth attack was intercepted and the ball rolled out over the sideline, coming clearly off the leg of a Brinsworth attacker………..Staveley throw in?………In an ideal world yes, but on this occasion a corner was awarded rather strangely to Brinsworth, with the resulting kick being whipped in and bundled into the net, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead as we headed into half time and a period of head scratching and a frowning competition (I think I won that one). Half Time: Brinsworth Whitehill FC 1 v 0 Staveley MWFC Staveley continued their search for cohesion as the second half got underway, only to see any meaningful threat stamped out by a battling Brinsworth side who exhibited a higher level of football than their current league position might suggest, but as many sides have found out the hard way, you simply don’t give Cam Dovison time on the edge of the area. Falling perfectly in front of him, Cam struck the ball sweetly with his left into the corner of the net giving Staveley consolation and renewed drive to go on and win the match. With the scores level, the Staveley we know and love began to emerge, albeit slowly but surely. Lewis Imrie’s pace upfront worried the Brinsworth defence, as did Will Brooks on the right wing. Cam Dovison, Lewis Hallowes and Ben Huckerby grew stronger in midfield as the blues attacks became more common and with 45 minutes gone they thought they’d cracked it as a ball through the middle found Lewis Imrie, who beat the defender to go around the keeper and find the net, unfortunately and more importantly with no linesmen he was judged to have been offside, many would’ve argued he was level but from an impossible angle the goal was ultimately disallowed. Somebody once said that lightning never strikes twice……They’ve clearly never been to Rotherham on a cold, wet Sunday morning……. As the host battled to get the ball out of their half, pressure from Will Brooks forced a Brinsworth defender to run the ball over the line for a Staveley throw in……ZAP!!.... As the Staveley players campaigned for a stoppage that even the host’s manager would agree with, the game was waved on and the ball sent forward to a pair of unchallenged Brinsworth strikers who made sure of the goal, once again raising the argument against a decision to not use Linesmen and leaving us with a score line of 2-1 to the home side. Although we should always play to the whistle, the Super Staveley Blues were left quite rightfully feeling hard done by as they fought hard to even the spoils as the seconds ticked away, but a final thrill wasn’t to be as the clock beat them to it. Although the scoreboard would suggest otherwise I’ll remember this match as a Staveley victory, they weren’t quite themselves on the day but they certainly didn’t ‘lose’ the match. Final score: Brinsworth Whitehill FC 2 v 1 Staveley MWFC Scorer: Cam Dovison Man of the match: Luke Hedley
