U16s Wrap Round 8 vs Sanctuary Lakes (Part B) (Take Note – “L” Plate Trainee writing the below Wrap – Be Kind) After a team bonding camp out on Friday night the boys were pumped for a huge game against Sanctuary Lakes. Looking for their second win on the trot it was never going to be an easy task, losing The Big Macedonian Matt Volkanovski (apparently off filming Happy Gilmore 2) and the Human Blanket James Floris prior to the match. However we did see the return of the Manchild, freshly tanned and rested up after a boys trip to Thailand (no ping pong jokes allowed at U/16 level sorry). Also returning was the Freak along with Jacob Lethal Tonkinson, and with the big names back it was expected we would be super competitive. There was a bit of chaos behind the scenes prior to the game with Goose getting lost on his way to our home ground, Maverick trying to find a pair of runners that werent covered in ash (not entirely sure how that happened *cough, fire walker, cough*) and the wolf man looking a little under the weather for some reason (hmmmmmmm). Prior to the first bounce Ice urged the boys to look him in the eye, then look at the word of the day on the whiteboard, that word was Courage, and the theme of the day was all about being courageous and inspiring your team mates. At the first bounce it was Rubber Man Markovski who set the tone immediately winning the ball from the centre and pounding it into attack. Unfortunately we couldnt capitalise early on the scoreboard with the Sharks holding firm in the last line of defence and rebounding with plenty of run. Before we knew it we were down by four goals and with the wet conditions it was never going to be easy to come back from there. At the first change Ice let the boys know in no uncertain terms that if they continued with no courage then it would be a dark day and most likely a 100 point defeat. Suddenly voices came from the pack, cmon boys lets fire up, its only quarter time were still in it, lets not let another one slip. The boys were determined to make amends, and thats exactly what they did right from the bounce, it was Rubber Man, Silky, Legsy, Paddy Dangerfield and Axe who combined beautifully to gain clearance after clearance. All of a sudden momentum had swung well and truly our way, and with Lethal Tonkinson and Manchild doing their best to hip and shoulder the Sharks back to Sanctuary Lakes we found ourselves winning the quarter and heading into the long break just 12 points down. At the half time break it was Goose and Wolf Man who urged the boys to dig deep, whilst Ice tried to come up with a plan to lead us to victory (somewhere in the change room Maverick may have been checking what was left of the hair on his legs) The plan took time but may have worked with the big Freak being moved forward, Benny Big Mac Mckenzie headed in to the ruck to back JB up and Manchild went onto the ball. All of a sudden the boys lit up the Town a Centre oval, kicking into a slight drizzly wind, it was The Rock and Azza combined with spare man Legsy in defense who rebounded time and time again and combined with the H Man giving plenty of courage on the wing we found ourselves winning the quarter and heading into the final break just 11 points down but with all the momentum. For some strange reason the Sharks started the final term with 3 extra defenders, which meant our boys could stream down from defence and pound our fwd fifty with attack after attack. And thats exactly what we did with the Maltese Stallion playing the quarter of his career, combining beautifully with JB to boot the first of the term to give us a real sniff. Shortly after it was the Big Freak who snagged one after a great grab, and all of a sudden we had more run than a Micallef Ram!! Within the space of about three minutes the Freak had put another one through and we had a 7 point lead with about 5 minutes to kill. A couple of near misses put us 9 points up, before a coast to coast goal from the Sharks gave them just a slight glimmer of hope. With a huge Laker crowd watching on, and us holding just a slender 3 point lead, it was the boys at half back , led by The Pres , Legsy and Paddy Danger, who repelled the Sharks relentless attacks, continually getting the ball to The Stallion out on the wing. With just 30 seconds left the ball was taken from in front of the coaches box to half forward where Softy (I mean Silky) took a great grab about 45 out from goal and we knew the game was ours. As he lined up the siren sounded and we had the game in the bag. Now it was just a matter of boosting our % and the Big Hairy Macedonian made no mistake!!! A great win Lakers for Reidys 50th and now for a well earned rest before our next opponent Williamstown. Onwards and upwards. Final Scores Caroline Springs - 10.8.68 Sanctuary Lakes - 9.5.59
