UF Canine Cognition and Behavior Lab: Our new (open-access) study shows which in-kennel behaviors predict a longer time to adoption. Dogs that leaned or rubbed on the walls of their kennels increased their median length of stay in the shelter by 30 days. When dogs faced away from the front of the kennel, they increased their stay by 15 days. When dogs engaged in back and forth motion in the kennel, their length of stay was increased by 24 days. This study shows which behaviors are important to adopters when they are selecting shelter dogs. Instead of relying on assumptions on what makes dogs adoptable, we now have data on which to base our behavioral interventions.
