UGANDA NATIONAL FARMERS FEDERATION HOLDS A SUCCESSFUL NATIONAL FARMERS COUNCIL ON 29TH AUGUST 2014 Uganda National Farmers Federation (UNFFE), the largest umbrella Farmers Organisation in Uganda, successfully held its annual Farmers Council at its premises Plot 27, Nakasero Road, Kampala, on Friday 29th August 2014. The Council which was well attended was officially opened by the Hon. Bright Rwamirama, Minister of state for Animal Industry. In his opening remarks the Minister called on farmers to strengthen their Organisations if their voice is to be heard by government. He emphasized the need to work hard on their farms, promote collective marketing in order to strengthen their bargaining power. It is through hard work that they will transform subsistence farming to commercial farming. This year’s National Council witnessed the election of a new National Executive Committee (NEC), the outgoing one having served for four years because of the one year extension in 2013 by the Council. The elections which were democratic, free and fair, were conducted by a neutral Electoral Commission drawn from the Private Sector Foundation (PSFU), the National Agricultural Advisory Services (NAADS) and an independent Agriculturist. All the posts on the Committee, save that one of Secretary for Women, were hotly contested for and the following emerged as winners to constitute the NEC which will guide and direct the affairs of Uganda National Farmers Federation for the next 3 years: 1. Mr. Charls Ogang - President (re-elected) 2. Capt.(Rtd) Esau Tisasira - Vice President (re-elected) 3. Mr. Emmanuel Sunday - Secretary General (re-elected :changed post) 4. Mr. Ssekabiito Joseph - National Treasurer (re-elected:changed post) 5. Ms. Rebecca Mutesi - Publicity Secretary (new entrant) 6. Ms. Monica Kabatooro - Secretary for Women (unopposed) 7. Ms. Sylvia Rose Nakafu - Secretary for Youth (new entrant) 8. Mrs. Margaret Odyek - Northern Region Representative (re-elected) 9. Mr. Ben Lubega - Central Region Representative (re-elected) 10. Mr. Charles Byabakama - Western Region Representative (re-elected) 11. Mr. Ignatius Ekwanait - Eastern Region Representative (new entrant) The in-coming President in his maiden speech thanked the electorate for the trust put in him and his new team to lead the Federation for the next 3 years. He pledged to serve with all diligence and to see the Federation make steady progress in mobilizing resources, advocating for the farming fraternity in Uganda and serving the membership.
