UGC to Check Net Answer Sheets Again Manually After 25000 Students Were Disqualified Mistakenly After finding more than 25000 candidates mistakenly disqualified because of their use of whitener/corrector fluid, now the University Grants Commission (UGC) shall correct and check all of the NET answer sheets manually. From page 3 admitting the error in judgment, UGC will again assess the answer sheets manually for the exam NET. This is because of the issue of computer checking which disqualified thousands of students all over India who appeared in the NET exam. The computer could not correctly judge because of the scratch marks or the use of corrector whitener on the answer sheets. This hindered the applicants from getting post-graduate scholarships and engagement in higher education institutes. After bringing out the mistake on part of the UGC, the commission will now manually check those answer sheets showing final result code — 666 —. This code means disqualification due to using unfair means. Two days later to declaration of UGC individual student’s results i.e. on October 22, it was noticed that large number of students had been considered ineligible because of usage of unfair means. Ved Prakash, Chairperson of UGC said that authority would now take a moderate outlook since great number of students has been fallen under this category. While, Sunaina Sehgal, An examinee informed that their invigilator ordered them to alter the code of centre on their admit cards because of being incorrect and thus the fluid/whitener was used, saying that UGC will handle it. On Optically Marked Readable (OMR) answer sheet it is instructed to not make use of whitener or scratch the sheet. This hinders the fair checking and disqualifies the students. For this mistake, many students were seen protesting before the UGC-NET centers in various parts of the country, they accused that this way the commission finds a way to maintain the number of NET qualifiers minimum.
