UK maritime intelligence provider renews warning about piracy 17-10-2013 The latest attack at a British-managed merchant vessel off the Somali Basin on Friday prompted UK maritime intelligence provider Dryad Maritime Intelligence to to warn other vessels of a possible return of Somali piracy in the area. The maritime intelligence providers director, Ian Mille, stressed that the attack on the British merchant vessel, as well as another incident on a second vessel on Monday, could be repeated by the Pirate Action Group (PAG). Despite the pressure applied by coalition forces and the assessed depletion of pirate resources, there was a likelihood that we would see a break out of a PAG into the sea lanes and that the hijack and ransom of a single large merchant vessel would be all it would take to feed the infrastructure of the Somali pirate criminal enterprise, Mille said. Following Mondays report, it would appear that the attack on two vessels in the space of four days confirms that the Somali pirate business model is not yet broken. Continued vigilance and strict adherence to BMP measures in all areas are the keys to success in keeping vessels safe, he added. Dryad Maritime also cited favourable sea conditions as another factor in the resurgence of piracy from the Somali Basin to the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean since the Southwest Monsoon season is about to end. Although there have been significant numbers of reports of suspected pirate activity during the SW Monsoon period, especially in the waters of the Gulf of Aden and Bab el Mandeb strait, we have not considered these to be pirate related and have more likely been interaction with local traffic and fishermen, Mille said.
