UK to gift Arkavathy to city TNN Bangalore: The British High Commission hasofferedtechnical expertise to rejuvenate the Arkavathy river. Water resources minister MBPatilon Wednesdaysaidthe British high commissioner met the principal secretary for water resources recently,and agreed to give consultative support to develop river Arkavathy,once a main source of drinking water for Bangalore,on the lines of river Thames in London.The assistance will be in mapping the river route and on what needs to be done for its rejuvenation.Asian Development Bank and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA),too,have come forward to fund the detailed project report and consultancy, he said. The total catchment area of the Arkavathy is around 6,000 hectares,and its length is around 80 km.It takes birth in Nandi Hills and passes through various places. CAUVERY WATER Thestate governmenthasclearly told the Cauvery Supervisory Committee (CSC ) that it cannot release 90 tmcft water to Tamil Nadubetween June andAugust,due to shortage of water in its reservoirsin theCauvery basin. Patil said reservoirs reach their brim very late,and it wasnt possible for Karnataka to release a monthly quota fixed by the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal.Weve already filed objections in this regard.When we dont have sufficient water in our reservoirs,how it is possible to release water to Tamil Nadu he questioned. FOREST BANK The water resources department is contemplating a forest bank on land belonging to the department.A sum of Rs 500 crore will be set aside to develop the forests.The department has hundreds of hectares of unused land alongside canals and dams,which could be developed asforests.Thislandwouldbeexchanged with the forest department when irrigation projects require forest land, he said.Projects like Kalasa-B anduri and Upper Bhadra are not approved dueto non-clearancefrom theenvironment department.
