@UKLabour #MinimumWage plan to increase it as a proportion of average incomes is welcome, but we need to see the detail - and wouldnt a #LivingWage commitment be better? The Labour Party leader Ed Miliband has set out plans for a new minimum wage - but wont reveal the detail. The scandal of 10 Downing Streets hands-off policy on low pay means there are now more working than workless people in #poverty in the UK. The Low Pay Commission sets the minimum wage, currently £6.31 per hour, but Labour want to set it as a proportion of average earnings, meaning it could be boosted to more than over the course of the next parliament. The Labour party has flirted with the idea of introducing the living wage – currently £7.65 in the wider UK and £8.80 in London – by law if it wins the next election, but this new idea looks like a direct replacement.
