UKRAINE - ETHNIC COMPOSITION. There was a lot of incorrect information in the media on the enthnic composition in Ukraine. The only correct information is the latest cencus of 2001. The Ukrainians are circa 78%, Russians – 17%, other groups – 5%. The only region where ethic Russia are a majority is Crimea – 58%. In other regions the Ukrainians are dominant in the range from 97% to 56%, the Russians compose from 1% to 39%. The attempts to present the Ukrainians, whose first language is Russian, as Putin supporters – is ungrounded and manipulative as we do not know each person’s political stand. And in general, ethnic Ukrainians – whatever language they speak – it is NOT Putin’s business at all. Period.
