UM IMPROVES POSITION TO 377 IN ARWU KUALA LUMPUR, 15 AUGUST 2014 – The ranking of UM in the ARWU (Accademic Ranking of World Universities) has improved to the position of 377 in 2014 compared to 401-500 in 2013. The result is encouraging, and it has put UM higher in the rank of premier university league. It endorses our international academic standing that has received recognition globally. The improvement in the ranking suggests that UM is competitive internationally. This is a significant jump which indicates that the strategic plan of UM that was put in place since 2011 to strengthen its fundamentals in teaching & learning, research, innovations, publications and internationalization has delivered positive result. While UM is pleased with its achievement in ARWU, the university is aware of its most important role as an institution in providing quality higher education and its responsibility towards the process of nation-building. As in the case of other rankings systems, ARWU rating is merely an indicator of the position of UM compared to other universities in the world. The more important task is for UM to use these indicators as a gauge to build a strong foundation for the university. The results of the ranking provide useful barometer for the university to improve its performance through a thorough examination of the gaps and shortage of our achievement in the criteria measured. In addition, UM also places great importance on the national education agenda as contained in the National Higher Education Strategic Plan (PSPTN) that covers nearly all aspects of the function and performance of a university.
