UMMATAN WASSATAN It is indeed a very intelligent question. A moderate Muslims is simply a Muslim in accordance with the Quran. Since in the present day divisive milieu there are extremists, Salafis, Barelvis, Deobandis, and diverse sectarian groups and subgroups, the word Moderate Muslim simply denotes a Muslim who believes in the core message of Islam that does not admit of all kinds of sectarian and ideological divisions and doctrinal orientations. Thus, “A Moderate Muslim” as defined will be free from any sectarian bias and not consider Muslims of other sects as spiritually inferior. In fact, “A Moderate Muslim” will not regard the Ahmadi as non-Muslim, and the moderates among the Shia and Sunni will not exchange the rubric of Kufr, and over time the Muslim community, now lost in the ever expanding labyrinth of theological doctrines, interpretations, speculations and innovations will find a common ideological platform to create a moderate community (Ummatan Wassatan) - an epithet used in the Quran: “Thus have We made of you an Ummatan Wassatan.”} – Surah: Al-Baqarah (Heifer) ~ Chapter: 2 – Verse: 143 Simply put, a moderate Muslim is not a new creed. It only means the a Muslim who follows the middle course as enjoined by the Quran - who is moderate.
