UMSC is refurbishing the Hospital, IUIU launched the Medical School. Are we to see a Muslim refferal hospital soon? Dear Brothers and sisters, I think my cry is slowly being answered. Two days ago I visited UMSC hospital after again being disappointed at Mulago referral Hospital where I had taken my Mother for treatment. This time I thought that going to the private wing of the hospital will be any better but never the case. I reached the hospital and the nurses were all smiling and welcoming, I thought this time around things had changed. I greeted the nurse and then started narrating how my old mother was sick. She asks me where she was and I said she was in the car. I explained to her that I had come to find out the processes before I get her out of the car. In a very friendly mood she tells me go and bring her for registration. My first shock came when I asked her can I pick one of the wheel chairs I saw by the side, she says you can pick it only if you have registered and paid 25000 Ug shillings. I paid the 25000 and I got the chair out picked my mother and started on the process. The hospital was extremely crowded and surprisingly there was not even any medical person who cared to screen the people around even during this time of Marburg. To me this was so scaring because after recently going through Entebbe Airport where people are being seriously screened and sprayed disinfectants as if in the plane there is Ebola and Murburg I could not imagine what I was seeing in a hospital where there were sick people. I was imagining what if one of these sick people has Murburg anyway I left it to Allah- He is all knowing and most Merciful. So I kept in this crowd for another 3 hours attending to my old mother who was now quite restless. She kept on the wheel chair but the nurse also kept reminding and reassuring me that she never asked me for anything so I should keep that wheel chair safely. Later the Doctor attends to my mother but prescribed some pain killers which he advised us to buy. He told us that he can only attend to her after taking the pain killers and after having the pain completely arrested. To me this was okay but after reading on the medical form I realized he had recommended Diclofenac which I know if taken without food it can be very risky and my mother had not eaten anything for she did not have appetite. I took a few minutes deeply thinking about the doctor`s prescription without guidance, the hours I spent standing, the level of carelessness all medical officers had even during this era of Murburg vis-à-vis the attention given to a wheel chair – I praise Allah- He is Great. He is the only person to protect us. But inside me I was saying something has indeed gone wrong. Anyhow that story is long and sad. My Mum continues to suffer but I am trying hard and holding tight to the rope of Allah(SWT). But the following day I went to UMSC hospital and I saw magnificent work being done at the Hospital. Hope no one will tell me that a big investor has taken it up. I was indeed flabbergasted by the kind of refurbishment work taking place at the hospital hope we are getting a Muslim referral hospital. I was deeply inside me saying that this is a relief. For I am seeing things happening our way, IUIU has opened a Medical school so we shall have Doctors produced and then sent to UMSC Hospital. That is gorgeous. To the Medical school in IUIU please do one thing: include Islamic ethos as a course unit to help the medical students graduate knowing the Islamic stand on fairness, Kindness to the sick and old, corruption etc. I pledge to teach it if you give me a job. Mwattu Nze naffa sisomeseza ku basawo!!! You may think Uganda is alone, this is not the case. Today while taking lunch here in Zanzibar I sat with a UK National and in our conversation lunch she tells me that the situation is becoming worse in UK. She added that You cannot afford to fall sick, just seeing a Doctor can take you sick hours. I asked why and she said the population has grown especially with the influx of people from neighboring countries. My prayer is Allah gives me more days to see a Muslim referral hospital taking shape. Thumbs up for UMSC. shafique sekalala
