UMass Investigates Racist Vandalism In Dorm Amherst, Mass. (WGGB) — Two students at UMass Amherst have been the targets of racist vandalism in their dorm. The school is calling on everyone to ensure a the university is defined by inclusion and respect. “It’s very sad to me that students in their own home and on their own campus have things done to them that make them feel unsafe or un-welcomed,” said Helen Duros. School officials declined to give details of what was written but say they condemn language intended to marginalize or make any member of the community unsafe. “I initially thought that obviously this is a major problem on our campus. Racism. It’s continuously being a problem and it’s only right that Subbaswamy send an e-mail addressing the problem,” said Jordan Brown. “As a community, it is imperative we work together to reaffirm our values of inclusion and respect for all. We must acknowledge the power of language and use it to advance social justice, inclusion and access. We must ensure that all members of our community experience a welcoming and safe environment in which to live, learn and work,” said Subbaswamy. UMass police are investigating the incident and say that such expressions of hate and intolerance have no place on the campus. Students plan to rally in front of the Student Union Thursday at 3:30 p.m. to demand accountability from the university. This isn’t the first incident of its kind in the Amherst community. Just this past year, about a half dozen racist notes led to a series of school lock downs at nearby Amherst Regional High School.
