No todas las células viven el mismo tiempo. los glóbulos rojos de la sangre viven solo de diez a treinta horas. Las células del estomago tienen una vida de unos dos días y las de la piel se renuevan cada tres o o cinco semanas. Las células de los huesos tienen una mayor duración pero también se renuevan cada dos años aproximadamente. Se podría decir, que cada dos años tenemos una esqueleto nuevo. A medida que vamos envejeciendo, hay células que se van renovando con mayor lentitud o incluso llegan a dejar de renovarse, como es el caso de la células nerviosas.
