UN PROFESOR DE CHINA EN HONG KONG I have just received the card you all signed with messages of support for Hong Kong. Thank you so much!!! Here are some recent words on Kong Kongs situation: I have been at Occupy Central many times in the past two weeks, and it is absolutely extraordinary, not least because of the steadfastness and civic-mindedness of the protesters (some of whom are my former students). The extraordinary non-violence shown by protesters in the face of pro-government gangsters and thugs makes me truly proud to be a Hongkonger. But for this reason, I hope that the protests will end very soon. At present, the students are heroes in the eyes of the majority of Hongkongers. But if major roads continue to be blocked, at some point before long, many Hongkongers will turn against the students, because the blockades are making their lives so difficult. If this happens, the protests will lose their legitimacy. So I really hope that the protestors will declare victory and quit. There has indeed been an extraordinary victory. Yes, the government has not conceded anything, but most observers agree that CY Leung will not last long as Chief Executive after this, and Beijing has no doubt paid attention to what has happened in Hong Kong, despite official bluster saying they haven’t. If the protests were to stop now because of a voluntary halt on the part of all protesters, we all know that with the next provocation by the Hong Kong or Beijing government, 100,000 or more people will gather at Admiralty within 12 hours, and they can’t jail us all. So let’s declare victory, which we have indeed won, and quit. Of course, as we all know, these protests are in many ways leaderless, and so much persuasion may be necessary to get the last few thousand protesters to leave the streets of Mong Kok or Admiralty. But the struggle is only beginning. Let’s withdraw for now, and get ready for the next stage! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here is a shocking video of Hong Kong police brutality, last night-- splashurl/mkre5mc This is truly shameful...
