UNAMA Featured Photos: Afghans from civil society groups today organized a gathering in the country’s capital city of Kabul to discuss environmental issues. Today’s meeting, which brought together government officials, parliamentarians, members of provincial councils and concerned citizens, focused on limiting the use of plastic bags and disposable plastic utensils as a way to protect the environment. According to Afghanistan’s National Environment Protection Agency (NEPA), some 70 per cent of the solid pollution found in Afghan cities is plastic. In 2011, the Afghan Cabinet Council ordered all municipalities to ban the use of plastic bags in all shops. The Cabinet Council also asked the Ministry of Commerce and Industries to ban production of plastic bags in the country and the Ministry of Finance to prevent the import of plastic bags. In today’s gathering, participants expressed concerned that the directives of the Cabinet Council were not implemented effectively, and agreed that environmental protection not only is the duty of the government but also requires cooperation from all citizens.
