UNBROKEN Directed by Angelina Jolie Screenplay by Joel Coen and Ethan Coen Starring Jack OConnell Basis of this film is A survivor who would not be Broken hence the title, Unbroken. The survivor is an Olympian runner caller Louis Zamperini who is played by Jack OConnell. The film is mainly centred around the WWII period where an Olympian called Louis Zamperini is captured by the Japanese Navy whilst floating in the Pacific Ocean in a raft following a B-24 Bomber plane crash. Louis and two other crew members spend some 47 days trying to survive the harsh elements of the Pacific Ocean with shark attacks – no this isnt Jaws! The script is well written but not really very emotionally driven despite the harrowing content of Louis having to become a POW and subject to cruel abuse from the Japanese commander, Mutsushiro Watanabe. For me, this film wasnt that much different to watching The Railway Man and didnt really give too much edge to make an outstanding film that you would watch again. It is a film that makes Louis out to believe God is his saviour and how he managed to survive the plane crash, the POW camp and cruel abuse given out by the Japanese Commander. Louis dreamed of one day running in the Olympics in Tokyo but like he says in the film, he didnt think he would firstly be a POW. The film is long but it could have been stretched in length a bit to cover how Louis ends his journey rather than those out-take write ups that give an insight of what happened to each character. So the film is a bit Life of Pi meets The Railway Man. Is an OK watch but not a classic film like other WWII films covering POW camps. 3/5 from me because am a fan of the Coen Brothers otherwise just the sort of film to watch on a Sunday afternoon. https://youtube/watch?v=XrjJbl7kRrI
