UNDER THE RADAR: Gilbert Mesquite and Gilbert Campo Verde get overlooked in the southeast Valley, where most of the focus is on Chandler and top Division I teams Chandler and Hamilton. But Mesquite and Campo Verde are both 8-1 and meet Friday for the Division II, Section VI championship. Both schools beat Tempe Marcos de Niza. Mesquite did so Friday with Josh Eckley leading Marcos’ offense. Eckley got his numbers – 383 passing yards, two TDs, and two rushing scores. But Mesquite has as fast a secondary as there is in Arizona and was able to win 47-28. Juan Giraldo had an interception, Payton Haslam threw for three TDs and Paul Perry ran for 168 yards. AROUND THE STATE -Top-ranked (Division III) Goodyear Desert Edge (9-0) scored 35 points in a 10-minute span and beat Buckeye (6-3) 63-14, as QB Anthony Hernandez completed 15 of 20 passes for 260 yards and three TDs. -Peoria improved to 9-0, rallying to beat Peoria Sunrise Mountain 23-21 in a Division III game. Evan Ford made an acrobatic catch for the go-ahead touchdown in the final quarter. It was his first TD of the season. -Chandler Fox, who moved from receiver to quarterback a month ago after Sean Paul Brophy suffered a back injury, completed 17 of 21 passes for 333 yards and three TDs, as No.2 (Division II) Scottsdale Chaparral (8-1) set a school record for passing yards in a game (436) in a 54-6 rout of Cave Creek Cactus Shadows. -Luke Rubenzer completed 15 of 17 passes for 349 yards and three TDs and ran 12 times for 147 yards and three more scores and had an interception on defense in second-ranked (Division II) Scottsdale Saguaro’s 55-28 victory over Gilbert Higley.
