UNDERSTANDING ACUPUNCTURE “There is a reason why the science of Acupuncture was found; a reason why it is practiced and a reason why it works – and the reason is it heals” Despite being a perfectly safe, scientific and holistic method of healing, with a high success rate, Acupuncture hasn’t found its feet in India. There is a perception that treatments are painful, risky and meant essentially for pain management. Aversion to, and phobia of needles and the question of infected needles are the other factors that keep us away from Acupuncture. However, a lot of our discomfort has much to do with perceptions and fear than with fact. Acupuncture is mostly a pain free process. At most a sensation similar to being pricked is experienced briefly which also subsides once the points are activated. Needles do not go deeper than just the first layer of your skin. Seasoned practitioners mostly use single-use needles and therapy can be applied for any symptom of the mind and body. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dr. H Bhojraj, Chairman, Academy of Accupressure and Accupuncture, Bangalore explains the theory, and busts some common myths regarding Acupunture in this article. 1.How does an Acupuncturist diagnose the disorder in a System? Disorders in the human body are diagnosed with pulse reading in the radial artery on the left and right hand near the wrist. Based on the pulse reading, the constitution of the person at that point of time will be decided. Depending on the constitution, 4 acupuncture points are selected as per Dr. Bhojraj’s method and 4 needles are inserted on the surface of the skin (upto a maximum of 0.1 mm) and the needles are left for only 5 minutes or less. 2. What are the diseases acupuncture has the potential to cure? Angina, High Blood Pressure, Palpitations, poor circulation, Asthma, Chronic breathlessness, Chronic Bronchitis, Cold, Cough, Colitis, Constipation, Diarrhea, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Indigestion, Stomach Ulcers, Cystitis, Incontinence, Infertility, Irregular periods, Morning sickness, Pre-menstrual Syndrome, Prostatitis, Acne, Eczema, Psoriasis, Arthritis, Back pain, Bell’s palsy, Epilepsy, Headaches, Migraine, Multiple Sclerosis, Neuralgia, Rheumatism, Sciatica, Stiff neck, Stroke, Tinnitus, Anxiety, Depression, Eating disorders, Insomnia Since acupuncture treats the root cause of the disease, it has great potential to cure any disorder in the system. Many patients turn to Acupuncture only as a last resort after trying many other therapies. Instead I would advise people to try this in the beginning as soon as the symptoms appear. 3.How long will a course of treatment last? Treatment may be frequent if the symptoms are acute, but if the illness is chronic, it is advisable to take treatment once in a week. As the patient starts to show improvement, the frequency of the treatment reduces. Generally the patients show some improvement within the first 3 or 4 sittings. It may take longer if the illness is severe or if it is chronic. The ability to diagnose and treat dysfunction long before the symptoms manifest, makes acupuncture an extraordinarily effective form of preventive therapy. 4. Can Acupuncture be done on children below 15 years? Normally we do not recommend Acupuncture for children below 15 but Acupressure can be done by the therapist. It gives wonderful results for children since their self-healing mechanism is at its best till 15 years of age. 5.Can Acupuncture be used during pregnancy? It is advisable not to take Acupuncture or Acupressure during pregnancy. But an expert Acupuncturist can treat some acute conditions like back pain depending on the diagnosis. It is better to avoid Acupuncture during pregnancy. 6. What happens if the needle is wrongly inserted? Since diseased organs seem to have a lower threshold of response, only a small stimulus is needed to correct dysfunction of the diseased organ. On the other hand, considerably big stimulus is needed to alter the function of a disease. On the other hand it is normally harmless even if a wrong point is activated. This is because the threshold of response of the healthy organ is beyond the stimulus of a mere needle prick. 7. What is the Children Immunity Development Program developed by your Institute The Children Immunity Development program is designed to train parents and guardians of young children in the use of specific Acupressure points which when pressed regularly will boost the immunity of a child, thereby reducing the need for any kind of medication. This understanding enables parents also to relieve common symptoms of sore throat, cold, fever, colitis etc. We connect with schools across the city and encourage parents, teachers, care takers to learn this method and use it to the child’s benefit.
