UNDERSTANDING GENESIS (Babel) : Genesis 10-11 After the Flood the World was given a new start. But instead of spreading out and repeopling the earth as God had commanded, they built the great tower of Babel in defiance of God. They thought they could establish a worldwide empire that would be independent of God. In judgment God sent a confusion of tongues and scattered them abroad. The race was then divided into nations speaking different languages according to to Noahs three sons,Shem,Ham,and Japeth. Shems sons settled in Arabia and to the east; Ham;s sons settled in Africa; Japheths sons settled in Europe. The great Jewish historian,Josephus, declares that the tower of Babel was built because the people did not want to submit to God. As we read the story of Genesis 11:1-9,the narrative seems to imply that the people were at cross purposes with God. As a result there was confusion of tongues and dispersion abroad. A different in language tends to separate people in more than one and to check progress in commerce,in arts and in civilization. Man tried to glorify himself ,but Gods purpose that man shall only glorify Him. If you read Genesis 10 and 11,you will find the basis upon which the nations were divided according to the 3 sons of Noah-Shem,Ham and Japheth. You will also find the reason for the division. The main body of Noahs descendants seems to have migrated from Armenia, where Noahs family left the ark, back toward the plain of Babylonia where they built the tower.
