UNEMPLOYMENT CONTINUES TO FALL There is still a lot to do, but as this article by Emily Baker in todays Examiner shows, unemployment in Tasmania continues to fall. In Launceston and the North East, unemployment has declined from 5000 in 2013, to 3500 in 2014. JOBLESS RATE CONTINUES TO DECLINE By EMILY BAKER Unemployment has fallen in most regions of Tasmania, according to data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics yesterday. The detailed Labour Force data showed that the number of people unemployed in December 2014 – 17,200 – was 2000 less than in the same month the previous year. Similarly, Hobart saw a drop, recording 6700 unemployed in comparison to 7800 in December 2013. Launceston and the North-East went from 5000 to 3500 unemployed , and the North-West and West fell from 5000 to 4600. Only the South-East bucked the trend with a rise of 900 unemployed people to 2300. Treasurer Peter Gutwein conceded there was still work to do in improving the unemployment rate. He pointed to the Sensis Business Index Survey , also released this week, which showed business confidence in Tasmania had experienced the biggest rise of any state or territory. ‘‘Unemployment rates continue to drop around the state, with the unemployment rate on the North-West the lowest it’s been in two and a half years and the rate in the North and North-East dropping over half a per cent in the last 12 months,’’ Mr Gutwein said. ‘‘We will continue to drive investment, support business growth and invest in Tasmania’s future as our plan outlines.’’
