UNENDING DRAMAS OF ABSURDITY IN THEATRICAL PDP: A QUICK REVIEW OF FLAGRANT ABUSE OF POWER (1) BY: COMRADE IDRIS ALAO (OBSERVATION) The ruling party has, since 1999, been in control of the centre with little to show for it. More often than not, the enormous executive power vested in the presidency is largely responsible for the ruling’s party unending arbitrary use of power and according to an old dictum, absolute power corrupts absolutely. There are indications to buttress my point. The ruling party possesses the political power which in turn begets the economic power. The two are double-edged weapon; they can be use to favour and victimize any opposition. The truth is that there are proper checks on the powers of the president. The reality however is that they are not well-entrenched. Unless the needful is done, the flagrant abuse of power will remain. The withdrawal of the Security details of the Speaker of the House of Representatives following his defection to the All Progressives Congress is yet another attestation of the abuse of power that the party has been known for. It is surprising that the PDP, who recently receives defected members from the Labour Party in Ondo state including its Governor in their large numbers, lacks the moral strength to accommodate Tambuwal’s defection to the opposition. This is not the first time the party would refuse to maintain demureness and tow the path of decorum in conducting its own affairs. President Jonathan demonstrated his total loss of fairness when he said that the privileges of the Speaker also defect along with him. The GEJ-led administration has witnessed series of abuse of power. Under Jonathan, Media houses were clampdown, the victimization of Opposition was close to elimination; their members received degrading treatment and their Governors couldn’t move freely. It is on record that some APC governors couldn’t fly back to their respective states after the inauguration of the Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the Emir of Kano in last June. The same uncouth incidence occurred during the grand rally for the Former Governor of Ekiti state, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, prior to the 2014 Ekiti gubernatorial elections, where Governor Ameachi was denied entry into the state at the border town between Ondo and Ekiti by the ‘official thugs in uniforms’. Governors Wammakko of Sokoto and Adams Oshionhole of Edo were denied access to fly from their respective location to attend the rally.
